Frequently Asked Questions

Someone has "hacked" someone else's account - what can you do?

Someone has "hacked" someone else's account - what can you do?

Just to clarify, the person who has spent the other's money isn't an anonymous hacker far away. Instead, the culprit is likely to be another child in the same school or even the same class who has logged in with the victim's username and password. That gives you an idea that the breach was made possible by either the child themselves, by the teacher (inadvertently) or by accident.

Children - if someone has spent your money then we're very sorry to hear this. The good news is your teacher can get your money back and change your password. Remember not to share your password with anyone, not even with a friend. If you were the child who logged into someone else's account and spent their money, then you should be as upset with yourself as the person's who's money you've spent. A good rockstar is an honest rockstar and that sort of behaviour is dishonest. You should promise to yourself to not do that again and say sorry to the other person who worked hard to earn that money.

Parents - Please speak to your child's teacher if you become aware that your child is either the perpetrator or victim. They can take care of the refund. Please talk to your child about sharing their login details or their actions as appropriate.

Teachers - Please head to My School > Avatar Refunds for advice on how to bulk-change passwords and refund avatar purchases. We don't track IP addresses.

My child's real name appears at the end of a multi-player game, is that safe?

My child's real name appears on the website, is that safe?

As teachers, parents or edu-business owners ourselves, we're extremely conscious of child safety so, to be clear, we take all concerns seriously but the short answer is yes, it's safe.
Here's a longer answer in three parts!

  1. The only external-facing place where a real name could be displayed is at the end of a Festival or Arena game.
Just because the real name appears at the end of a Festival or Arena game doesn't immediately pose a risk. After all, apart from the name there's no way to identify which school they're from or where they are in the world. Literally no way. So they could be John Smith, for example, from anywhere.
  2. Furthermore, that real name is only visible to the few people who happened to be in the same game at the same time. Not strangers wandering past the website, not even kids playing in another game even if they're sat side by side. Just the ones in the same game who have to login to even be there.
  3. The risk is basically 0 but teachers can display rock names instead of real names at the end of a game by changing the first setting on My School > Charts > Chart Settings.

Have you got any parent letters?

Have you got any parent letters?

Yes, on the Downloads page.

Have you got a launch presentation?

Have you got a launch presentation?

Yes, on the Downloads page. Here are some more ideas for a big launch in assembly.

  • Get staff members to "rock it up" with wigs, inflatable guitars, music and, well, shaking.
  • Play the video of Baz Wynter embedded in the launch powerpoint.
  • Make your own "sorry I can't be there" video, like this Holcombe Brook Primary School did.
  • Get your fastest teacher (not your fastest pupil just yet) to show what's possible in 60 seconds.
  • Get a couple of students who have already used the website to talk about why learning tables is beneficial and what they love about TTRS.

Remember to keep some energy back for weekly or regular assemblies, wall displays, certificates, etc. A big launch is good but maintaining the momentum is more important in the long-run.

My child is unhappy with the gender of their avatar - what can be done?

My child is unhappy with the gender of their avatar - what can be done?

It depends what you mean here. If you mean they've chosen a rock name and they want the chance to choose again, then their teacher can clear the chosen rock name so that the next time the child logs in they can choose again. (Teachers - go to Pupil Setup, tick the box next to the child's name and press the Reset Users button underneath.)

If you mean having chosen a rock name they've got an avatar they want to change, the good news is that everyone starts with that avatar no matter what rock name they chose. All they need to do is change the eyes, lips and hair to make it more to their taste.

Can I choose my rock name again?

Can I choose my rock name again?

Ask your teacher to clear your rock name so that the next time you login you can choose again. (Teachers - go to Pupil Setup, tick the box next to the child's name and press the Reset Users button underneath.)

I've set the tables, why aren't they working?

I've set the tables, why aren't they working?

Two possible reasons:

  1. You're logged in as yourself when testing. Please bear in mind that when you set the tables it will only affect the questions your children/pupils get, not the ones you get. You'll still face all questions up to 12×12!
  2. Setting the tables only affects children/pupils when they play in the Garage or Arena. If they play in the Studio or Festival they will get questions up to 12×12

How do I set up a tournament using Pastoral bands?

How do I set up a tournament using Pastoral bands?

  1. Go to My School > Pupil Setup > Pastoral Bands.
  2. Select the competitors and then click Move Selected > Create New > "Competition" > Add
  3. For the event itself get them to play 4 or 5 at a time in the Competition Rock Arena. Just make sure the master computer with the projector also joins the game (but don't actually play).

How do I add lots of pupils to Pastoral bands at once?

How do I add lots of pupils to Pastoral bands at once?

  1. Select the required pupils on the Pupil Setup page and click Export Users. This will produce a spreadsheet.
  2. In column F enter the Pastoral Band for each pupil and save the spreadsheet.
  3. Re-upload the spreadsheet on My School > Pupil Setup > Upload Users.

It will automatically create any Pastoral Bands required and add the pupils to them, without affecting their data or altering their Maths Band membership. Incidentally, you can use this same approach to move them into lots of different Maths Bands at once or bulk change their passwords or yeargroups. Just don't change their username.

This will send an email with a link to set the password for the new teachers account.

Why is there no music playing when I play a game?

Why is there no music playing when I play a game?

When playing the game there isn't any sound. It would probably annoy teachers after two minutes of listening to 30 students playing different songs! You're welcome to use the YouTube playlist on our Playlist page though.

Why can't I see my child in the charts?

Why can't I see my child in the charts?

Players will earn a Rock Speed and appear in the chart once they have completed their Baseline, which is done by completing 10 games in the Studio. Only games in which they score will register, so if they score 0, the game will not count as one of the 10.
