What does a carefully designed explicit maths lesson actually look like? How does it fit into a wider sequence of learning? And what thinking goes into the script, examples and precise language a teacher uses?

In this webinar, David Morkunas from the Explicit Mathematics Program (EMP) will take us inside a lesson on teaching the standard algorithm for multiplication.

David will unpack what’s happening beneath the surface of a lesson,  what pupils have learned beforehand, where the lesson is heading next, how the examples have been selected and sequenced, and why the teacher script uses the words it does.

Bruno Reddy will host the session, stopping along the way to ask questions and get inside the mind of the lesson author: why was it designed this way, and what can teachers learn from those decisions?

We’ll also be joined by Toni Hatten-Roberts, who will introduce EMP, explain why it was created, share what they’ve learned from its implementation in Australian schools, and talk about how teachers and schools can get involved.
